Hmm… I love a good Smithfield ham… especially at Christmastime. I think I might hold off next year though… and yes, I know it’s safe to eat pork. Here’s why http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090428/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_swine_flu_mexico_ground_zero
I can’t believe the scheidt coming out of Texans mouths (and fingers for those connected) these days…
When the right wingers were having their Tea Parties on Wednesday, Gov. Rick Perry got a real rise out of the crowd by mentioning secession from the Union. Too bad the idiots in the crowd were cheering too loud to hear that he didn’t think it was a good idea. He’s still, and pardon my french, a fucking idiot for even mentioning it. Maybe Perry should be impeached. I’d support it, even if for no other reason than he has driven Texas’ Education system to it’s knees by setting school income levels at PRE-Katrina levels. Fuckin’ idiot.
Anyway, here’s an email I got today… NOTE THAT I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM and I think the idiots that wrote it tend to forget where the funding for most of this stuff comes from! Enough… here’s the email:
THE COUNTRY of TEXASPlease note that Texas is the only state with a legal right to secede from the Union . (Reference the Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.)
We Texans love y’all, but we’ll probably have to take action since Barack Obama the Dems won the election. We’ll miss you too.
Here is what can happen:
1: Barack Hussein Obama becomes President of the United States , and Texas immediately secedes from the Union .
2: George W. Bush will become the President
of the Republic of Texas ..
You might not think that he talks too pretty,
but we haven’t had another terrorist attack,
and the economy was fine until the effects of the
Democrats lowering the qualifications for home loans
came to roost.
So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?
1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas.
We will control the space industry.
2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States .
3. Defense Industry–we have over 65% of it.
The term “Don’t mess with Texas ,”
will take on a whole new meaning.
4. Oil – we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas
will need for the next 300 years. What will the other states do? Gee, we don’t know. Why not ask Obama?
5. Natural Gas – again we have all we need
and it’s too bad about those Northern States.
John Kerry and Al Gore will have to figure out a way
to keep them warm….
6. Computer Industry – we lead the nation in producing
computer chips and communications equipment -
small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer,
EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel,
AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Miconductor,
Dallas Semiconductor, Nortel, Alcatel, etc, etc.
The list goes on and on.
7. Medical Care – We have the research centers for cancer research,
the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world,
as well as other large health centers.
The Houston Medical Center alone employes over 65,000 people.
8. We have enough colleges to keep us getting smarter:
University of Texas , Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas Christian,
Rice, SMU, University of Dallas , University of Houston ,
Baylor, UNT (University of North Texas),
Texas Women’s University, etc.
Ivy grows better in the South anyway.
9. We have an intelligent and energetic work force,
and it isn’t restricted by a bunch of unions.
Here in Texas, it’s a Right to Work State and, therefore,
it’s every man and woman for themselves.
We just go out and get the job done.
And if we don’t like the way one company operates,
we get a job somewhere else.
10. We have essential control of the paper, plastics,
and insurance industries, etc.
11. In case of a foreign invasion,
we have the Texas National Guard,
the Texas Air National Guard, and several military bases.
We don’t have an Army, but since everybody down here
has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo,
we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one.
If the situation really gets bad,
we can always call the Department of Public Safety
and ask them to send over the Texas Rangers.
12. We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs,
and several types of grain, fruit and vegetable,
and let’s not forget seafood from the Gulf.
Also, everybody down here knows how to cook them
so that they taste good. Don’t need any food.
13. Three of the ten largest cities in the United States ,
and twenty-three of the 100 largest cities in the United States ,
are located in Texas .
And Texas also has more land than California , New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts,
Maryland , Rhode Island and Vermont combined.
14. Trade: Three of the ten largest ports in the United States
are located in Texas ..
15. We also manufacture cars down here, but we don’t need to. You see, nothing rusts in Texas , so our vehicles stay beautiful
and run well for decades, well most of the time
This just names a few of the items that will keep
the Republic of Texas in good shape.
There isn’t a thing out there that we need and don’t have.
Now to the rest of the United States under President Obama:
Since you won’t have the refineries to get gas for your cars,
only President Obama will be able to drive around in his
big 9 mpg SUV.
The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.
You won’t have any TV as the Space Center in Houston
will cut off satellite communications.
You won’t have any natural gas to heat your homes,
but since Mr. Obama has predicted global warming,
you will not need the gas as long as you survive the 2000 years
it will take to get enough heat from Global Warming.
Signed, The People of Texas
SLEEP WELL TONIGHT
“THE EYES OF TEXAS ARE UPON YOU!!”
One Nation Under God
If this ever happens, look out Boston, here I come. That, or Poland, or maybe even Canada.
Sincerely,
MyWorldRevised

I saw this on my friend Jeremy (from BU)’s blog, so I figured I’d take it and see… I think of myself as pretty smart, I pay attention to what’s going on, and I like history. With all of this, I guess I wasn’t really surprised when I got a 90.91% on this WICKED HARD Civil Liberty Quiz.
Here’s what I got wrong… and in my defense, I think on #30 I was thinking of Governmental spending, not individual spending.
You answered 30 out of 33 correctly — 90.91 %
Average score for this quiz during November: 78.0%
Average score: 78.0%Answers to Your Missed Questions:
Question #9 – A. Make treaties
Question #11 – A. their arguments helped lead to the adoption of the Bill of Rights
Question #30 – C. decreasing taxes and increasing spending

Some not so strange parallels between this economic crisis and the last big one…
And strangely, McCain is right in the thick of both of them.

Oh boy! Soon I’m going to start wondering if McCain’s Barbie even knows her real name. She certainly can’t get this straight even though she’s been surrounded by briefers for the last 3 weeks about the mortgage crisis. Then there’s this…
And did you happen to catch the Letterman Show (that he “bailed out” on, claiming to be working on “bailing out” the country)? Here’s some highlights…
I agree with Dave. Something is not right… I think he made the biggest blunder of all in his choice of Sarah Palin.
I guess that’s it for my morning politics.

Today I was adding books to my shelf on Shelfari, and I added one of my old theology books, Why Christianity Must Change Or Die, by John Shelby Spong. In looking there, I came across an interesting article that he wrote back in 2005. And it’s still relevant. I thought maybe, just maybe, this article might spur some conversation here that, thanks to me, has been severely lacking. Ok, so here’s the article… Enjoy!
Jesus did not die for our sins
John Shelby Spong
Let me state this boldly and succinctly: Jesus did not die for your sins or for my sins.
That proclamation is theological nonsense. It only breeds more violence, as we seek to justify the negativity that religious people dump on others because we can no longer carry its load. We must rid ourselves of it. One can hardly refrain from exhorting parents not to spare the rod lest they spoil the child, if the portrait of God at the heart of the Christian story is that of an angry parent who punishes the divine Son because he can take it and we cannot.
The interpretation of Jesus as the sacrificed victim is a human creation. It was shaped in a first-century world by the disciples of Jesus, who drew on their Jewish liturgical symbols as a way the Crucifixion might be understood. They borrowed this understanding directly from the Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, in which an innocent lamb was slaughtered to pay the price for the sins of the people. The sinful people then had the cleansing blood of that sacrificial lamb sprinkled on them.
We are not fallen, sinful people who deserve to be punished. We are frightened, insecure people who have achieved the enormous breakthrough into self-consciousness that marks no other creature that has yet emerged from the evolutionary cycle. We must not denigrate the human being who ate of the tree of knowledge in the Genesis story. We must learn rather to celebrate the creative leap into a higher humanity. Our sense of separation and aloneness is not a mark of our sin. It is a symbol of our glory. Our struggle to survive … (our) radical self-centeredness, is not the result of original sin. It is a sign of emerging consciousness. It should not be a source of guilt. It is a source of blessing. We do not need to be punished. We need to be called and empowered to be more deeply and fully human and to develop the godlike gift of being able to give ourselves away freely in the quest for an even deeper sense of what it means to live. Jesus did not die for our sins. Jesus demonstrated in an ultimate way that it is by giving that we receive and by loving that we enhance life.
John Shelby Spong, the retired bishop of Newark, N.J. is the author of The Sins of Scripture. See Christina Cathro’s review on p.17.

I’ve firmly made a decision… it’s about time too. I’ve been ever leaning towards Obama in ‘08, especially when McCain picked Palin, but now, I’m certain.
This next video did not change the way I thought about him… it really didn’t change much at all. But I know that this man gets “me”. He gets what needs to happen with the economy. He especially gets what needs to happen in EDUCATION. And, the rest of his stuff is pretty good too. At least better than McCain’s stuff.
Anyway, give this video a view… maybe it won’t change what you’re thinking about Obama or McCain… but then again, maybe it will.
